2018 Distracted Driving Scholarship Winner: Owen Falkenham
We are pleased to announce the winner of McKiggan Hebert Lawyers 2018 End Distracted Driving $1000.00 Scholarship is Owen Falkenham. Owen is a native of Nova Scotia and is attending the University of Ottawa where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in computer technology.
What caught the scholarship committee’s attention was the fact that Owen has been an advocate for the prevention of distracted driving for many years. As Owen described in his application essay:
“In my grade 8 year I decided to create a project for the schools annual science fair. Its purpose was to attempt to find a method to counter distracted driving. After researching multiple concepts, I tested the effect of negative stimuli in deterring distracted behaviors in cars; the idea was inspired by the simple but effective seatbelt buzzer and also used auditory stimuli to dissuade distracted drivers.
I used this device and the results from my attention testing has a proof of concept for the effectiveness and thus the lives that could be saved from implementing a safety device in the car that was both for the driver’s safety and the safety of those around them by combating distracted driving. The project was well received and I won awards both from the school and regional level, as well as being selected to attend and winning the award for best innovation in the transportation category at the national science fair.”
It is encouraging to see how many smart young people are paying attention to the issue of distracted driving. Hopefully Owen’s pursuit of his degree in Mechanical Engineering will result in further innovations to help reduce the dangers of distracted driving.
